Rated 5 out of 5 by Amer from Great Performer.I have an a7R III and the a7 II.? I purchased the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 lens and the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 Lens, as I was not sure which one would serve my purpose better. I shoot Fashion/Portraits. This is the comparison :85mm f1.8 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? vs ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 85mm f/1.41. Silent focus ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? Noisy focus2. Medium size and weight ? ? ? ?? Twice the size, three times the weight3. Very fast focus in good light????? Very fast focus in good light4. Very fast focus in poor light ? ? ? Slower focus in poor light5. Very rarely 'focus hunts' ? ? ? ? ? 'Focus hunts' in poor light6. Sharp center image at f1.8 ? ? ? ? Razor sharp center image at f1.47. Semi blurred edges at f1.8 ? ? ? ?? Sharp and detailed edges at f1.4Conclusion : The Ultra Sharp 85mm f/1.4 has far superior optics when seen at 100%, making it the perfect choice when photographing anything that requires edge to edge sharpness. The average sharpness of the 85mm f/1.8 make it the perfect lens for Mid to Full portraits as it does not enhance the imperfections in the human skin. The edge softness can be overcome by shooting at a smaller aperture if required. For everything else...................there's Photoshop
An ideal portrait-length prime, the FE 85mm f/1.8 from Sony is a sleek short-telephoto lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits this lens's use in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques.
